During the summer I I posted about the real-live version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs entitled Mirror Mirror, being re-adapted for the big screen.

Jellicoe Road Script

I was so excited today when I went on Goodreads and saw a blog post by one of my all-time favourite YA authors, Melina Marchetta. If you haven't read one of her absolutely incredible books yet, please go and do so now! I fell in love with her from the minute I read the opening of Saving Francesca and my love was cemented with The Piper's Son. Jellicoe Road though, there was something special about that one. It's rare that a book hits me so emotionally that I cry, but I can say without shame or embarrassment that this is exactly what Jellicoe made me do. I laughed in moments, cried in others and when the last page was turned I sat in bed stunned and just let my brain absorb all my thoughts. 

So, with all this waxing poetic aside, I was so excited and intrigued to hear that Melina Marchetta has been working on a script for Jellicoe Road for a number of years and is now finally done. Her sense of accomplishment must be great and I for one can only imagine the work that went into penning such an amazing story for the big screen. Her post goes on to enforce that the book being optioned into a film is still in early stages, but they are reading actors soon for various roles before the script goes off to industry people, in Marchetta's words "Taken to Market".

Untitled Snow White Film in the Works

The Brother's Grimm fairytale is hitting the big screen in another 'real life' adaptation of a classic fairytale. I'm loving the new trend of remaking the Disney friendly tales into their much grittier, darker and more artistic beginnings. 

Director Tarsem Singh's project is expected to hit theaters in March 2012 with big names like Julia Roberts, Nathan Lane and newcomer Lily Collins leading the cast. 

Here's the little synopsis blurb: 

An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright in a spirited adventure comedy filled with jealousy, romance and betrayal that will capture the imagination of audiences the world over.

The dwarfs all have really cute names too: Chuckles, Grub, Butcher, Half-Pint...

The fairytale looks promising and I hope that as the pictures seem to show, that the cinematic quality will be eye catching and unique. I love it when the costumes, hairdos, and setting are all done up and reinvented for the latest audience. It's always fun to see another person's interpretation of a classic! And in this version it looks like Lil' Ole Snow White gets to kick it into high gear and kick some butt - yay :)

The Restorer - Adapted for TV

So I had a **squeeee** moment when I found out through Amanda Steven's Tweets that her awesomely creepy and deliciously suspensful first novel in the Graveyard Queen series, The Restorer was optioned for TV by ABC. There isn't much word yet about who will play the fabulous heroine and graveyard restorer with the added bonus of being able to see ghosts - one Ms. Amelia Gray, nor is there any word on who will step into the shoes of uber sexy and edgy police detective John Devlin - this I'm eager to know! But what is certain at this point is that the writers of both Off the Map and Pushing Daisies, Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg will reuinte to pen the TV adaptation of Steven's wonderful book.

I absolutely loved this book and seriously am dying to get my hands on the next two books in the series. I am especially excited to see where the author will take Amelia and Devlin's seemingly doomed relationship and consequently how this story will be turned into a tale suitable for a few seasons (or more) of good supernatural suspense television. Stay tooned for more details as I learn more :0 meanwhile, read the book why don't cha?!

The Great Gatsby - Made Immortal Once Again...

For the second time since it's publication in 1925, The Great Gatsby a classic American tale of 20's opulence and high society is being made into a feature film for the big screen.

I love this book. I was forced to read it in high school (can't remember which grade) and usually that only causes me to rebel and not enjoy a book - being forced to read something always annoyed me. But with this classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald I was more than impressed and the story has stayed with me all these years.

I wouldn't say this is truly a love story, but more one mans determination to fit into an ever changing and opulent society where being on the outside means rejection and heartache. Jay Gatsby is idealistic and determined to remake himself in order to win the heart of a woman - Daisy Buchanan, who is the epitome of this post WWI society; materialistic, selfish, self-centered and unaware.

Jay is a tragic hero and one who I will always rank among my favourites. I am especially excited for this new movie version because of the cast. The actors slated to play the fundemental roles are in my opinion perfect for the roles, especially the two main characters Jay and Daisy.

Jay Gatsby will be played by Leonardo Dicaprio, who gets better and better as he gets older (not to mention more good looking). His quiet intensity and ability to lose himself in a role will, I think make for the perfect Jay Gatsby.

Daisy Buchanan will be played by Karey Mulligan, who i also think will be perfect in the role. She's sweet and shy and all things delicate, but can also play the madenning, manipulative, selfish characters. I think she'll be perfect for the delicate and charming Daisy.

other notable cast members include Tobey Maguire as Nick Carroway, the narrator of the story and Jay Gatsby's friend with Isla Fisher as the unstable Myrtle Wilson.

This movie is still in pre-production but is slated for tentative release in November 2012. Can't wait! My love for Leo knows no bounds and I think this movie will be a hit with Baz Luhrmann as director (remember Romeo & Juliet?) how could Luhrmann not bring the roaring 1920's, with it's glitter and darkness to brilliant light.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

I am beyong excited to see that another Sherlock Homes movie is coming to theatres this December.

Slated for wide release on December 16th, 2011. The second installment of the smashing series penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the 1800's, reunites the stars of the first movie.

Jude Law reprises his role as Sherlock Holmes' trusted sidekick Watson

Rachel McAdams joins the cast once again as Irene Adler, which I am especially excited about because I was worried she wouldn't be in the second movie.

And of course the suberply talented and fiercly hilarious Robert Downey Jr.

(who shares my birthday *tee hee*) will once again be the famed Holmes!

Also included in the cast will be Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes and Jarred Harris as Holmes' eternal nemesis Professor Moriarty. I'm really looking forward to Moriarty's debut into the film adaptations after the hint we got of this cunning character in the previous film.

I was so impressed with the scenery and backdrop of Victorian London in the previous film as everything from the lush outifits to the dreary and filthy streets of London screamed accuracy.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower {Movie}

Although I haven't read this debut book by Stephen Chbosky yet, I know that for a lot of people The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one beloved novel. It follows the ups and downs of a teenager named Charlie.

While's he's not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. He's a wallflower--shy and introspective, and intelligent beyond his years, if not very savvy in the social arts. We learn about Charlie through the letters he writes to someone of undisclosed name, age and gender; a stylistic technique that adds to the heart-wrenching earnestness saturating this teen's story. Charlie encounters the same struggles many face in high school--how to make friends, the intensity of a crush, family tensions, a first relationship, exploring sexuality, experimenting with drugs--but he must also deal with the devastating fact of his best friend's recent suicide. - from goodreads.

There aren't many details about this movie yet as it is still in production and slated for release in 2012.

I may have to pick it up though. I love seeing movie adaptations of books but I have to read the book first otherwise once I've seen the movie I'll never pick it up!

The Immortal Instruments - Movie Casting News

It was announced yesterday that Jamie Campbell-Bower has been cast to play Jace Wayland in the upcoming (and I think) one of the most anticipated book-into-movie adaptations to hit the big screen since Harry Potter.

As a die-hard lover of the Immortal Instruments series I have been following updates on the movie for a while on Cassie Clare's website and on Twitter. There have been many names tossed back and forth for the 'perfect' Jace, but Clary was cast first, months back so it was a matter of finding that perfect guy to place off the heroine of the much loved novels.

Alex Pettyfer was mentioned along with Max Irons and Ed Speelers. Honestly I think in looks and build, Alex Pettyfer came the closest, but I wasn't wholeheartedly convinced that he could pull off the complexities of a character like Jace. He's a young actor and has only recently started landing leading roles. After having seen Beastly I also wasn't that enamoured of Pettfyer's acting abilities. He has potential, but he's not there yet and I seriously didn't want this amazing series to become another Twilight when it hit the big screen. Talk about an awful movie adaptation - full of kids who can't act (with the possible exception of Robert Pattinson, who is proving he also has potential to move on past Edward).

When I heard today that Jamie Campbell Bower was the final pick I have to ray my first reaction was disappointment. I've seen Campell in the tv show Camelot where he plays Arthur. On the show he comes across as a whiny, spoiled baby who needs to grow up and be a man. Harsh, but he turned me off the character compeltely. I also wasn't that impressed with his looks, but I have to say that after reading a great interview from Cassandra Clare herself, who said she was sent the audition tapes and cried when she saw Campbell pulling off Jace, my worries have been put at ease.

Let's get down to the nitty-gritties. Why is Jamie so perfect for Jace?
I have seen his audition tape. They sent it to me because they were so impressed with it, and they wanted to get my feedback. People have been asking me what scene he filmed. The answer is a bunch of different scenes. He did scenes where he had to be funny. He did scenes where he had to be romantic. He did scenes where he had to be angry and badass and he pulled that all off amazingly.
He auditioned with Lily, and he and Lily had incredible chemistry that sort of blazed off the scene. I'm just sitting here watching this on my computer, and you know, he was not the only person they've ever sent me to look at. I've gotten lots of headshots and this and that, and I'm watching the audition and I literally started crying because that was my Jace and Clary on the screen. And it's an incredible feeling to see that even as an audition. This is amazing. He was snarky funny where he needed to be snarky funny, and he was badass where he needed to be badass. And he and Lily were incredible together.
In fact, after all the auditions, because she's done auditions with a bunch of different actors, she wrote to the head of the studio, Clint Culpepper of Screen Gems, and she was like, 'It's Jamie. It's gotta be Jamie.' He told me that, this was before he had seen the audition, he told me that he wrote back and he was like, 'He's a rock star hipster kind of guy. Do you think he can be a badass warrior-dude, as well?' And she wrote back and said, 'That is Jace standing there. When you watch the audition you'll see what I see.'

I'm sure fans are dying to know if there was a kissing scene involved in the audition.You can tell the fans that one of the scenes they rehearsed is the greenhouse scene.

I think people will like that.I did. [Laughs]

What does it feel like to finally have Jace cast? It's been such a long process.First, it's an incredible relief. There have been so many... There is all this stuff that goes on behind the scenes and fans are like, 'Nothing is happening.' And I'm like, 'Lots and lots of stuff is happening.' They're auditioning hundreds of guys and looking at all of these people, and nobody is quite right. It feels like the search for the Fountain of Youth—you're never going to find it. So you can't go forward with the project until Jace is signed off on.
I think another thing that people don't realize is how many people have to sign-off on something like that. There's like seven or eight producers on this movie. I don't even know who they all are. And they all have to sign-off on this. And then it has to go to Sony and the head of the studio, Amy Pascal, and she has to sign-off on Jace. So everyone has to agree that this is the right guy. Getting everyone to agree—imagine trying to get a group of eight randomly selected people to agree on something. I really was starting to think that they were never going to find a guy that everyone agrees on. Then Jamie comes along and does this blow-you-away audition. So they were like, 'Okay, this audition is amazing. We have to bring him back and test with Lily.'
Another thing that impressed me about him was that he asked—I got a message relayed to me through the studio, wanting to know what Jace would wear. He is the only actor who tested for this role who asked this.

Has Jamie read the books or was he going strictly off the script?I know he's read at least the first book, and he's also read the script.

It sounds like he really did his homework for this role.The audition [process] is not short. It's, do this scene, do it over, do it over, do it over. It's one of those things when you realize how tiring it is to be an actor. Every time he was told to do a tiny adjustment, he did it perfectly. He clearly had some thoughts about Jace that were really smart.
It was quite funny, in the greenhouse scene, there's a line where he says something to Clary about, 'You should have thought about that before you kissed me,' and she says, 'I kissed you?' Meaning I started it? And he says, 'Yeah, it wasn't that memorable for me either,' and walks off doing the Jace walk-off, which he did great. Then he'd say something off-screen to make Lily laugh! And she would try not to laugh, and it was unbelievably cute. Like, he'd walk off and say, [affecting a British accent], 'Yeah, you were rubbish anyway.' [Laughs]

How is his American accent?Well, he did it in his British accent. And we've actually gone back and forth about whether to leave the accent or not have the accent. He did one scene in an American accent, which he does perfectly fine. Either one is fine with me. I think it's going to be up to the director because Jace is, in fact, not American, so if he decided to do it with his British accent it would be fine.

One of the issues some fans seem to have is that Jamie is a bit...slight. What sort of makeover do you think he'll have to undergo to embody Jace?One thing is that he is less slight now than he used to be just from watching the audition. He has certainly buffed up for 'Camelot.' I think he was slighter before he did that, and I know he had to do some months of boot camp, which is like, you work out and you ride horses and you lift heavy weights. I talked briefly to the producer today, and basically he said,' He has the right build for it. He's tall. He's got broad shoulders. We're going to put some more muscle onto him, so he's more built. And, you know, we're going to cut his hair and give him the golden eyes, and he's going to be perfect.' I'm not particularly worried because he's got a beautiful face. I mean, yeah, he'll probably have to drink protein shakes and lift weights for a while. [Laughs] I'm pretty sure he's down with it.

I have to say that after having read the interview and understanding how much faith Clare has in Jamie and the rest of the already cast-cast I am at ease with Campbell and think that *fingers crossed* he will do Jaace a lot of justice. You can't mess up a character loved by so many who've fallen hard for this series and I think that with Campbell's clear interest and enthusiam in the role he will do an amazing job. And these two look pretty darn cute together. They fit - which I guess explains the chemistry Clare mentioned!

It must be such and amazing but also terrifying experience to see your beloved written work go up on the big screen, up to other people's interpretation. I love that the entire movie crew have been supportive of Clare's role in the process and have been diligent in asking her opinions and advice. For an author who is letting her work go into the hands of others it's so important I think for the novelist to be a part of the movie making adventure.

Here's to casting the other beloved characters - Alec, Isabelle, Magnus, Simon and Valentine - Woot!

Let's just say I'm even more excited for this movie to finally be released in 2012!

The Secret Circle - Adapted for TV this Fall

I love the fall season lineups when all the biggest networks release their new shows and returning stars.

On the CW, the host of The Vampire Dairies which is probably my number one favourite show on at the moment – this is discounting all the gems from HBO that I watch when they are released on DVD – one of the three new shows set to premier in September comes from the same mind and executive producer that developed the total awesomeness of all the addictive vampire drama. Kevin Williamson is bringing another of L.J. Smith’s imaginative stories to viewers.

The Secret Circle has been slated for the Thursday spot (a good TV night!) and will most likely be shown right after The Vampire Diaries.

Here is the description of the new series. I haven’t read the books, (I didn’t read the Vampire Diaries either...but the show is for sure better! I’ve heard this from the lips of people who have watched the show, but even still, can you really beat seeing Damon Salvatore live on your screen each Thursday night? I think not.) but the preview, also below, has me intrigued.

Set in the fictional town of Chance Harbor, Washington the series will follow a California teenager who learns that she comes from a family of withces

Cassie Blake was a happy, normal teenage girl - until her mother Amelia dies in what appears to be a tragic accidental fire. Orphaned and deeply saddened, Cassie moves in with her warm and loving grandmother Jane in the beautiful small town of Chance Harbor, Washington - the town her mother left so many years before - where the residents seem to know more about Cassie than she does about herself. If this show is anything like the fast-paced, super charged, never a dull moment, full of intrigue and leave you on the edge of your seat, biting your finger nails moments as The Vampire Dairies than it’s sure to be a star.



Soon to be Released Movies based on Books!

I spent a good few hours yesterday with my dad looking up movie trailers - we both love watching them in theatres when we go to the movies and often get so caught up in the upcoming releases that we forget for a minute what movie we actually came to see.

Well, as we were wasting some time on a lazy Sunday we looked up quite a few and I noticed how many upcoming releases have stories based on books.

Here is a rundown of ones I'm excited for.

 

One Day  - watch the trailer!

Starring: Anne Hathaway & Jim Sturgess

To be Released: August 19th, 2011

Storyline: based on the book by David Nicholls, this story centers around two friends who meet in college in Scotland and spend the next twenty years reuniting to spend the anniversary of the day they first met together. This movie follows Emma and Dexter through the trials and tribulations of their lives, through good times and bad. Sounds very good.

Starring: Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave and David Thewlis

To be Released:  September 30th, 2011

Storyline: This one isn't necessarily based on a previously written book, BUT it revolves are Shakespeare one of the greatest writers of all time! I am a serious Shakespear fan and love anything that has to do with the genious writer - maybe this love has to do with the fact that my mom is a high school English teacher. I grew up speaking in Elizabethan English lol just kidding...Anyway, this movie revolves around the thought that Shakepeare is not the man society thinks he is, what if Shakespeare was a fraud?

Storyline: Okay so unless you've been living under a rock somewhere, closetted away from any source of pop culture and missed the phenomenon that was the Harry Potter series, you'll know about the books this final installment is based on. Fearing she has more than reached her quota, Ally Darling takes off on a cross-country trip, determined to find "the one" among the 20 of her former lovers

Starring: Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard & Viola davis

To be Released: August 12th, 2011

Storyline: based on the bestselling novel by Kathryn Stockett, the plot of the movie follows that of the book. I've heard great things about this novel and have it waiting on my bokoshelf to be read. I'll have to pick it up before the movie is released!

It looks really good.

It looks like more and more movies these days are being based on the plot of novels. Especially with all the good YA bokos out there. The Hunger Games is slated for release next year as well as one of my absolute favourite series The Immortal Instruments which is still in casting but should come out in 2012.

So far these all look like good summer/fall movie picks :)

Books into Movies {1}

 

"Book into Movies" is a feature where I will review movies I've seen recently that were based on or inspired by a book. 

It's not a recap based weekly or monthly but rather a random review system that is dictated by how often I get to the movies and how many are book related.

Director: Francis Lawrence
Writers: Richard LaGravenese (screenplay), Sara Gruen (novel)

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson & Christoph Waltz

Based on the novel of the same name by Sara Gruen.

Admittedly this one is a little out of what will become the norm as I have not read the novel. It is included in this feature though because I really enjoyed the movie and it made me want to read the book. The basic rundown is this: During 1930's prohibition when America is suffering from the Great Depression, Jacob Jankowski leaves his hometown after his parents tragic death and hops on board a travelling circus train. He becomes the circus's vet and quickly falls in love with Marlena, the "star attraction". The book goes into much more depth about the severe animal cruelty which became a growing practice in circus's of the time. The Benzini Brother's Circus is the most "spectacular show on earth" and its owner August is determined to best the rival Ringling Brothers at their own game when he acquires Rosie, a talented Polish Elephant. What transpires in the film is both harrowing and horrific and definitely not for the faint of heart when watching some of the harsher treatment of all the circus animals. I cringed several times when I saw the abuse meted out and came to tears when Rosie faced cruel beatings. The magic of the movie is in the characters though and I was captivated by the 1930's atmosphere, the background of Prohibition and the goings on of the circus antics themselves. It really is very interesting to learn about some of the darker secrets of these types of circuses - Red Lighting, hazing and the mob type mentality that once you are in the circus you can never get out. The scenes which incorporate the various circus acts and the players behind them were really well done and gave a  view into the lost souls who joined the circus to find a home. The acting was really well done, and I was pleasantly surprised by the leads as I am not a huge fan of Reese Witherspoon's. I was also wary going in that the chemistry between Robert and Reese wouldn't be enough to carry believable emotion and convincingly portray love between these two characters. From the first moment Jacob sees Marlena it is clear he is enamoured but Marlena is far more reserved given her brutal husband's possession of her. As the story progresses, though these two do discover one another through their love of the animals and especially Rosie - who forms the 3rd and arguably most adorable part of their love triangle. Rosie was superb and lived up to her name as "star attraction". At once believed to be stupid, this elephant provided much needed comic relief when slowly proving to both the audience and Jacob that she is much smarter than she appears. She speaks Polish afterall and couldn't understand the English commands! I could have done with just a few more scenes that showed Marlena and Jacob, because although you go with it during the movie, I wondered after if I was truly convinced that these two were so in love.
Even though I think Twilight is probably the worst movie ever made I really do think that Robert Pattinson has a nice career ahead of him after the Twiheart mania subsides. He showed himself capable of larger and more serious leading roles and I really enjoyed his portrayal of Jacob. Christoph Waltz was a compelling and twisted villain whose bursts of sudden and violent anger was exorcised on the animals, including a horrifying scene with Rosie that had the entire audience gasping. Although I have yet to read the book, the movie was enough to peak my interest and that's a complement considering I rarely read books after I've seen the movie version. 

Overall rating: 8/10 buckets of popcorn!

Based on the novel of the same name by Charlotte Bronte.

I love the Classics. I've read most of Jane Austen, loved North & South have tempered with Hardy, although I can't stand the depressing stories..but I have had a life long love of the Bronte sisters. I am admittedly a bigger fan of Emily and her darker work Wuthering Heights but there is something very compelling about Mr. Rochester and the gothic tale of love and personal triumph. I saw this movie version on my birthday a few weeks back and it was the perfect story for the rainy day that it was!

I've seen quite a few versions of Jane Eyre over the years and it seems for every new generation there has to be a new rendition, but I have to say that this one by director Cary Fukunaga is so beautifully touching. I was not at all convinced that Mia would be able to pull off the classic and beloved title role, but boy did she surprise me and surpass my expectations. She brought a subtle vulnerability and wonderful poetic strength and depth of feeling to the lead role. She was such a sincere heroine. I agree with a lot of critics who've said that Mia brought life and depth to Jane Eyre that had been missed in previous versions. She had such expression and range of subtle emotion that it became hard to look away from the screen whenever she was on it. Michael Fassbender who I totally and completely adore hit his stride again as the dark and brooding Mr. Rochester. He is the quintessential dark hero with carefully hidden secrets to boot. Michael is a superb actor who I first saw in his harrowing role as Bobby Sands, IRA member and lead protester in the 1981 Northern Irish hunger strikes in Steve McQueen's directorial debut Hunger. I come from an Irish background and did my minor in Irish Studies so I loved this movie although it is VERY hard to watch,. Fassbender is Irish so automatically I'm a fan :p but Fassbender's talent can't be denied. He is a true talent to have played such a remarkable role in 2008 and he had me glued to the screen once again in Jane Eyre. He was emotional, striking, maddening, dark and frightening but ultimately so passionate a vulnerable. Fassbender and Wasikowska played off one another so well and had great chemistry given their age difference. The scenery of the film was suitably gothic and the moors were appropriately a part of the story as was the shadowed atmosphere of Thornfield Hall.

Honestly if you haven't seen any film version of this classic novel, or have yet to read the book and don't really want to (although I would recommend you do before watching any movie version) this is the version to watch. It's easy to follow, very well acted and the setting comes to life through design and film techniques. A wonderful tribute to Charlotte Bronte's most notable work. 

Overall rating: 10/10 buckets of popcorn!
